Fix Gmail Notifications on Android After Updates

After a system or Gmail app update, push notifications stop arriving on a Nexus 4. Messages appear only when the app is opened manually.

Fix

  1. Go to Settings → Apps → Gmail.
  2. Tap Force Stop.
  3. Select Storage and tap Clear Data and Clear Cache.
  4. Reopen Gmail and re-enable notifications when prompted.

Why It Works

Clearing data resets the app’s sync adapters and refresh tokens, which often resolves stale background services after upgrades.

Caution

Clearing data removes offline mail, so ensure messages are synced back from the server after you relaunch the app. For corporate accounts, confirm you have the necessary credentials or device-management approvals before performing the reset.
